Sourcing supplies is now a normal part of a Laboratory Technician's
job (and can be quite time consuming.)
Here are some suggestions and any additions to this list would be welcome.
Audio Generator.
Wiltronics have an "audio generator" that would be suitable for use in schools. It has useful dials so that frequency can be selected, some of the audio generators available do not have scales. Refer to Bob Wegman for further advise. There is a picture of the unit on page 119 of the most recent catalogue
Batteries for stop watches.
Lithium batteries for the orange 'Unilab' stopclock (Eveready 392 or equivalent) are available from E.F. Hodge & Co. Brewer Street, East Perth, W.A. and also stop watch batteries (A76 or LR44).
Some other sources for batteries are 'Batteries Plus' located in Albany, Mandurah, Osborne Park and Cannington, and 'Batteries for Everything' in Welshpool.
Batteries - 1.5volt
Heavy duty 1.5volt batteries are available from Ace Models Midland Junction (Tel 9274 4519).The batteries are approximately 22cm tall, 7cm diameter, weight 900grams and are rated at 18amp/hour. They are supplied in cartons of 12 but small orders (less than 3 cartons) will be referred on to other agents. Click here for a photograph.
Beeswax
Beeswax is available from:

Belts - for Wimshurst machines, whirling tables etc.
This neoprene belting is no longer available commercially in Australia, however, a supply has been purchased by the RTG and is available upon request from any of the Regional Technicians.
The belting is cut to length, each end melted in a flame and then the two ends pressed together to form a belt.
Blood Colouring
There is a blood colouring concentrate available from St Johns @209 Great
Eastern Highway Belmont 9334 1222. It is available in 100g tube and is diluted
ratio 1:10 cost is $28.16. (5339)
It gives an authentic blood colour that can be used with the recipe for
artificial blood in the "problems and solutions" section.

Thames Bottle (15mL)
Bunsen burner hose clips.
Rubber or plastic hoses on bunsen burners must be fixed by hose clips. The clips are called 'OTK' clips and are available from BOC Gases. Most schools already have an account with BOC for industrial gas supplies enabling the clips to be ordered and delivered to the school. The part number for the clips is 'OTK1013' (size 11/13mm.)
The clips may be tightened using a pair of pincers, being careful not to nip off the 'wings', although special OTK pliers are now available for loan from the science equipment loan pool for this purpose.
Calcium carbonate (marble chips)
Do you find it hard to source marble chips that fit into a test tube??? They
can be purchased from "Rowe Scientific" for $8.80 for 1kg.
They are the "Silform Chemical "brand.
Computer mouse balls.

Cows eyes are available for dissection from Harvey Beef. They need to have a
faxed order on official school headed note paper.
The eyes will be delivered to a butcher that is an existing client of Harvey
Beef and is on their delivery schedule. Please give Harvey beef time to fill the
order by forward planning your requests. Eyes can be bulk ordered and frozen in
saline solution for later use.

Magnets.
A large range of magnets are available locally from 'Lodestone Industries', Unit 25/70 Roberts Street East, Osborne Park (telephone 08 9201 1644.) The range includes ferrite bar magnets in various sizes and nickel plated rare-earth magnets. Microscope - spare parts.
Eyepiece and objective lenses need not be brand specific, they are available locally from Rowe Scientific or interstate from Haines, Selbys or Serrata. The replacements usually fit but parfocality may be lost i.e. when changing from one objective to another, the image must be re-focused.
Spare parts for later model Orion microscopes are available from Rowe Scientific and BMS6 spares from Perth Scientific (or ISSCO interstate.)

Microscope - replacement bolts and screws.
Replacement bolts and screws are available locally from Western Tools, 34 Clavering Road, Bayswater, W.A. (telephone 08 9371 5055) who stock a very comprehensive range (eg. 2mm 0.6 pitch screws for the racks on Carton microscopes.)
Microscope slides.
Some years ago these very high quality slides were available though Government State Supplies. They are now available again directly from the manufacturer 'Western Histological'
